Monthly Review: Bitcoin ETFs Post a $2.7B September

This is bryptoflows' monthly review, covering the full calendar month rather than a single reporting week. A separate weekly recap published the same day covers the final reporting week of September in more detail.

September in one number

US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in +$2,699.2M net across the 18 reporting sessions of September through September 25 — the second-strongest calendar month of 2026, behind only August's +$3,539.1M. The next-best months this year were April at +$2,021.7M and March at +$1,315.6M; January, February, May and June were all net negative, bottoming at -$4,509.7M in June alone. September's total pushed 2026's year-to-date flow to +$1,021.3M, the first positive year-to-date reading of the year, after starting the month at roughly -$1,677.9M.

The month split into three distinct stretches rather than two. The first eight sessions, September 1 through 11, were choppy and only mildly positive: +$307.3M, with three of those eight sessions closing negative. The next five sessions, September 14 through 18 — the week of the Federal Reserve's rate decision — were essentially flat at +$6.1M, masking a sharp intra-week reversal from a midweek selloff. The final five sessions on record, September 21 through 25, did essentially all of the month's work: +$2,385.8M, more than 88% of September's entire net flow arriving in its last full trading week.

Best and worst days

September 21 was the month's best single session by a wide margin: +$999.0M, the category's largest single-day inflow of 2026 and the session that opened the month's closing rally. September 15 was the worst: -$450.4M, in the middle of the two-session slide ahead of the Fed's September 16 rate decision. Those two sessions bracket the month's whole character — a soft, uneven middle stretch bookended by a genuine Fed-week selloff and a sharp rebound rally in the final week.

Breadth followed the same arc. September 15 saw zero of twelve products post a positive flow, the month's single weakest breadth reading, and September 10 was nearly as narrow at one of twelve positive against six negative. From September 21 onward breadth improved sharply: September 21 itself saw seven of twelve products positive against zero negative, matched only by September 3's seven-of-twelve reading earlier in the month, and September 22 through 24 each held at four-to-six positive against at most one negative. The month's rally, in other words, was also its broadest stretch of participation — a pattern distinct from August, where the strongest inflow days were narrower and more IBIT-dependent.

Issuer rotation

BlackRock's IBIT led the month as it typically does, taking in +$1,711.3M — 63.4% of the entire category's net demand, a smaller share of the month than August's 86.8% because more products participated in the closing rally. Fidelity's FBTC added +$818.7M, its strongest month of the year, and Morgan Stanley's MSBT contributed +$251.2M. Grayscale's newer BTC mini trust added +$87.3M, ARK 21Shares' ARKB +$56.3M — a figure that hides a sharp reversal, since ARKB ran deeply negative through the Fed-week selloff before rebounding hard in the month's final week — and Bitwise's BITB +$50.5M. Franklin Templeton's EZBC was marginally positive at +$9.5M, and Valkyrie's BRRR finished flat at $0.0M.

Three products finished September net negative. Grayscale's legacy GBTC was the month's clearest laggard at -$236.1M, meaning Grayscale's combined issuer total — GBTC plus the BTC mini trust — was still negative for the month at roughly -$148.8M despite the mini trust's gain. VanEck's HODL shed -$35.6M, and WisdomTree's BTCW and Invesco Galaxy's BTCO were both marginally negative, at -$9.2M and -$4.7M. The spread between the best and worst performers — roughly $1.95B separating IBIT from GBTC — is narrower than August's nearly $3B spread, another sign that September's demand was somewhat less concentrated in a single fund than August's was, even with IBIT still dominant.

Price and the drawdown that narrowed

Bitcoin's price move gave the flow numbers their shape. The coin opened the month near $77,695 on August 31, per contemporaneous reporting, then fell through the month's choppy middle stretch to a reported intra-month low near $75,000 around the Fed-week selloff. From there it rallied sharply, briefly exceeding $87,000 in the days after September 21 according to CryptoTimes' coverage of the rally, before settling to roughly $84,413 by the close of September 25. Net across the month on record: a gain of roughly 9% from the August 31 open to the September 25 close, and a round trip of more than 15% from the intra-month low to the intra-month high.

The cumulative flow picture improved alongside price. Cumulative net flow into the category since inception stood at roughly $54.9B at the end of August; by September 25 it had risen to $57,615.5M. Measured against the category's all-time cumulative peak of $62,735.9M, the drawdown narrowed from double digits in percentage terms at the start of the month to -$5,120.4M, or roughly 8.2% below peak, by September 25 — a meaningful improvement driven almost entirely by the final week's rally rather than a steady month-long climb.

Strategy: a quiet month with one purchase, funded from cash

Strategy's bitcoin treasury moved far less than the ETF category this month. Across the three weekly 8-K filings dated in September so far — September 8, 14 and 21 — the company disclosed two flat weeks and one purchase, for a net change of +950 BTC over the month to date. Holdings opened September at 845,050 BTC (per the August 31 filing) and stood at 846,000 BTC as of the September 21 filing, an increase of roughly 0.11%. A fourth filing is due around September 28, after this review's publication, and will not be reflected here.

The lone purchase came in the September 21 filing: 950 BTC for $75.7 million at an average price of $79,670, covering the period September 14-20 and funded entirely from Strategy's own cash on hand rather than new share sales. The September 8 and September 14 filings each disclosed no bitcoin transaction at all, holdings unchanged at 845,050 BTC across both. Strategy's average cost basis moved only slightly across the month, from $75,412 to $75,416 per coin, on a total cost basis that rose from $63.73B to $63.80B. Financing capacity was unchanged all month at $44.34B of undrawn capacity across Strategy's five at-the-market programs, consistent with no new share sales in any of the three filings.

With bitcoin closing the month near $84,413 against Strategy's $75,416 average cost, the position's unrealized gain stands at roughly 12% — a meaningfully wider cushion than the near-breakeven reading in mid-September, built almost entirely on the month-end price rally rather than the modest 950 BTC added.
