Bitcoin ETF Flows Cool to $82.9M as September's Rally Fades
The week in flows
US spot Bitcoin ETFs closed the reporting week of September 28 through October 2 with net inflow of +$82.9M — positive, but a fraction of the +$2,385.8M the category took in the week before. Session by session: +$31.0M Monday, +$66.2M Tuesday, -$148.7M Wednesday, +$102.7M Thursday, and +$31.7M Friday. Wednesday's outflow ended a run that, combined with the final two sessions of the prior week, stretched to nine consecutive positive days totaling roughly $3.08 billion — independently reported the same day as a "$148.69 million net outflow, first outflow in 10 trading days." A new, shorter streak started immediately after: Thursday and Friday both printed positive, leaving the category on a two-session positive run as the week closed.
bryptoflows' rolling averages show the deceleration clearly. The three-session average has turned negative, at -$4.8M a day, dragged down by Wednesday's outflow. The five-session (weekly) average sits at +$16.6M, still positive but a small fraction of the +$477.2M it read a week earlier. The ten- and twenty-session averages, which still carry most of September's rally, read +$246.9M and +$109.3M respectively — a reminder that the slowdown is recent and has not yet worked its way through the longer windows. bryptoflows' flow-acceleration measure, which tracks the five-session rate of change, read -$460.6M, one of the sharper decelerations the site has logged — consistent with a hot run cooling rather than reversing, given the five-session average is still in positive territory.
Friday's close carried a z-score of -0.17 and sat at the 47.9th percentile of all 700 sessions on record — almost exactly the historical median. After a week this quiet, the honest read is that the category spent the week giving back pace rather than conviction: every session stayed within ordinary bounds for this market, even the Wednesday outflow, and nothing in the record this week looks like a reversal signal rather than a pause after an unusually strong run.
Where the moves came from
BlackRock's IBIT was again the category's main engine, taking in +$292.0M across the four sessions it reported (Friday's IBIT figure was not yet available at the time bryptoflows last recalculated this file) — more than three times the week's net total, since several other products finished negative. Fidelity's FBTC reversed hard from last week's +$701.6M, finishing at -$167.9M, including a -$125.6M single session on Wednesday that was the week's single largest move in either direction. Grayscale's legacy GBTC, which had gone quiet for the better part of two weeks, posted outflows on both Monday (-$23.2M) and Thursday (-$31.4M) for a net -$54.6M — a reminder that its redemption pressure paused rather than disappeared. Bitwise's BITB finished at -$38.6M, driven mostly by a -$18.1M Tuesday.
On the positive side, ARK 21Shares' ARKB added +$25.5M, Grayscale's newer BTC mini trust +$24.9M, and Morgan Stanley's MSBT +$9.4M across the two sessions it reported flow — all positive, extending its unusually clean record. Invesco Galaxy's BTCO and VanEck's HODL were small net negatives, at -$4.2M and -$3.6M. Franklin Templeton's EZBC, Valkyrie's BRRR and WisdomTree's BTCW reported exactly zero every session they appeared in.
Breadth tracked the week's shape: Monday and Tuesday split roughly two-positive, two-negative with the rest flat; Wednesday was uniformly negative across every product that reported a nonzero number; Thursday widened out to three positive against six negative as the rebound began unevenly; and Friday narrowed back to just two positive products — FBTC and MSBT — against zero negative, with IBIT itself not yet reported for that session. bryptoflows' concentration reading for Friday's session came in at a product HHI of 0.860, far above the 0.403 the category has averaged since inception — a function of how few products reported a nonzero flow that day, not a sign that demand itself has consolidated into fewer hands long-term.
Zooming out
Cumulative net flow into the category since inception now stands at $57,698.4M, up modestly from $57,615.5M a week ago. The drawdown from the category's all-time cumulative peak of $62,735.9M sits at -$5,037.5M, or roughly 8.0% below peak — a small further improvement from 8.2% the week before, though nowhere near the pace of the prior week's 4-point narrowing. Period totals through Friday's close: week-to-date +$82.9M, month-to-date (October, two sessions old) +$134.4M, quarter-to-date (also two sessions into Q4) +$134.4M, and year-to-date +$1,104.2M — still 2026's first positive year-to-date reading, now a bit further from zero than the +$1,021.3M this column reported last week. Life-to-date concentration is essentially unchanged at a product HHI of 0.405 and issuer HHI of 0.436; a single quiet week does not move a measure built on two and a half years of history.
September itself, now complete, totaled roughly $2.65 billion in net inflow according to contemporaneous reporting — bitcoin's second-strongest month of 2026 and, by the same report, about three times what Ethereum ETFs took in over the same month. That monthly figure belongs properly to a monthly accounting rather than this week's recap, but it is the context this week's quiet pace sits inside: a strong month that ended with its last session in the red.
Strategy: no new filing this week, cushion holds near 12%
Strategy has nothing new to disclose this week. The company's most recent 8-K, filed September 28 and covered in full in Thursday's treasury piece, reported a purchase of 1,665 BTC for $142.7 million for the period September 21–27 — direction acquired, funded entirely by new MSTR stock sales rather than cash on hand, a reversal of the prior week's cash-funded buy. No filing has landed since; the next is due around October 5, covering the period that includes this recap's reporting week. Holdings stand unchanged at 847,666 BTC against a $63.95B cost basis, or $75,437 average cost per coin.
What moved this week was, again, the market price the unchanged position is marked against. Bitcoin traded at roughly $84,635 as of early Friday UTC, per a same-day report that also described a brief move above $87,000 being rejected and $433.6 million in liquidations, mostly on leveraged long positions, as price fell back. At that price, the 847,666 BTC position is worth in the neighborhood of $71.7B against its $63.95B cost basis, an unrealized gain of about $7.8B, or roughly 12.2% above cost — essentially unchanged from the 10.9%–12% range this column and others have reported since the September 28 filing, since bitcoin spent the week trading in a band rather than trending. As always, this mixes bryptoflows' own SEC-sourced cost basis with an externally reported bitcoin price rather than bryptoflows' own candle feed, which remains unavailable in the site's source-freshness check, so it should be read as directional rather than exact.
What to watch
- Strategy's next 8-K, due around October 5, which will show whether the equity-funded buying from the September 28 filing continues, reverts to cash funding, or turns into a sale — 2026 has seen all three this year.
- Whether this week's quiet pace was a one-off pause after an unusually strong September, or the start of a genuinely slower regime; the five-session average is still positive but a small fraction of last month's run rate.
- Whether breadth widens back out beyond IBIT and FBTC, which between them accounted for essentially all of the week's gross activity in either direction.
- The MSCI index-exclusion review covering Strategy, with its public comment period now closed as of September 30 and a decision due October 16.
- Whether bitcoin holds its recent band around $84,000–$87,000, which matters both for Strategy's cushion and for whether ETF demand resumes chasing price from here.
