Bitcoin ETFs Shed $678.9M as a Wednesday Shakeout Hits Flows

The week in flows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs closed the reporting week of October 5 through 9 with a net outflow of -$678.9M, the category's first full week of losses since the Fed-week selloff in mid-September. Session by session: -$89.8M Monday, +$118.8M Tuesday, -$484.9M Wednesday, -$244.1M Thursday, and +$21.1M Friday. The week's total ranks in the bottom 15% of all trailing five-session windows bryptoflows has on record since January 2024 — not an extreme outlier, but a genuinely rough week by the category's own history, not an ordinary pause.

Wednesday did almost all of the damage. The -$484.9M session was the category's weakest single day since the February 2025 record of -$1,113.7M, landing at the 4th percentile of all 705 sessions bryptoflows has logged, with a z-score of roughly -1.7. It coincided with a leverage-driven bitcoin selloff: the coin fell below $84,000 early that day, and contemporaneous reporting put bitcoin at $83,911 — down 1.8% on the day — alongside roughly $360 million in long-position liquidations inside a ten-minute window, a separate report citing WatcherGuru adding that a second liquidation wave pushed the total closer to $400 million as ether fell under $2,600. That same outlet put the ETF category's net outflow for the day at $487.1 million — close enough to bryptoflows' own -$484.9M that the two sources are clearly describing the same session, and it reported the day's per-fund split (IBIT -$207.67M, FBTC -$105.15M) within a few hundred thousand dollars of bryptoflows' own IBIT (-$207.7M) and FBTC (-$105.1M) figures.

Thursday extended the selling rather than reversing it, at -$244.1M (13th percentile, z -0.97), before Friday's modest +$21.1M broke a two-session negative streak. bryptoflows' rolling averages show the deceleration clearly: the three-session average has fallen to -$236.0M a day, the five-session (weekly) average to -$135.8M, and even the ten-session average has turned negative at -$43.8M. Only the twenty- and sixty-session averages, which still carry most of September's rally, remain positive, at +$97.7M and +$98.4M respectively. The five-session flow-acceleration reading came in at -$184.0M, a sharp deceleration, though smaller than the -$460.6M reading this column logged two weeks ago when the prior slowdown began.

Friday's close carried a z-score of -0.20 and sat at the 45.8th percentile of all 705 sessions on record — almost exactly the historical median, and a reminder that the week's damage was concentrated in two sessions (Wednesday and Thursday) rather than spread evenly across five.

Where the moves came from

The week's defining feature was not which fund led buying, but which one normally does and didn't. BlackRock's IBIT — the category's dominant engine for nearly three years, responsible for roughly 115% of cumulative net flow since inception — finished the week at essentially flat, just +$1.1M net across five sessions, including its own -$207.7M outflow on Wednesday. That is an unusual week for IBIT specifically, independent of the category's broader direction.

Fidelity's FBTC did the most damage, finishing at -$380.3M for the week, including -$105.1M on Wednesday and a further -$197.1M on Thursday — its single largest daily outflow of the two. ARK 21Shares' ARKB was the second-biggest detractor at -$207.2M, split between -$85.2M on Monday and -$101.7M on Wednesday. Grayscale's legacy GBTC, which had gone quiet in recent weeks, posted -$47.5M net, split across Wednesday (-$39.3M) and Thursday (-$8.2M) — a reminder that its redemption pressure can still resurface. Bitwise's BITB finished at -$45.3M, and Grayscale's newer BTC mini trust gave back -$11.0M, its only nonzero session of the week falling on Tuesday.

On the positive side, Morgan Stanley's MSBT added +$7.8M, all on Tuesday, and Franklin Templeton's EZBC added +$4.7M on Thursday — notable mainly because EZBC was the week's only fund to post an inflow on the day everything else sold. VanEck's HODL was a net -$1.2M, its Wednesday outflow of -$3.5M only partly offset by a Friday inflow of +$2.3M. Invesco Galaxy's BTCO, Valkyrie's BRRR and WisdomTree's BTCW reported exactly zero every session.

Breadth tracked the week's severity. Monday and Tuesday were roughly split, with most products reporting zero. Wednesday was uniformly negative across every product that reported a nonzero flow — six of six. Thursday narrowed slightly to one positive (EZBC, at +$4.7M) against five negative, the single most lopsided session of the week; gross buying across all twelve funds that day totaled just $4.7M against $248.8M of gross selling. Friday widened back out to two positive (IBIT, HODL) against one negative (FBTC). bryptoflows' concentration reading for Friday's session came in at a product HHI of 0.649, well above the 0.409 life-to-date average — a function of how few products traded a nonzero amount on any given day this week, not evidence that demand itself has consolidated into fewer hands.

Zooming out

Cumulative net flow into the category since inception now stands at $57,177.7M, down from roughly $57,856.6M a week ago — the first weekly decline in cumulative flow this column has recorded in over a month. The drawdown from the category's all-time cumulative peak of $62,735.9M widened to -$5,558.2M, or roughly 8.9% below peak, from about 7.8% the week before. Period totals through Friday's close: week-to-date -$678.9M, month-to-date (October, seven sessions old) -$386.3M, quarter-to-date (also seven sessions into Q4) -$386.3M, and year-to-date +$583.5M — still positive for 2026, but down sharply from the roughly +$1.1 billion this column reported at the start of October, and the thinnest the year-to-date figure has been since it first turned positive in late September. Life-to-date concentration is essentially unchanged at a product HHI of 0.409 and issuer HHI of 0.441; a single rough week does not move a measure built on two and a half years of history.

Strategy: no new filing this week, cushion holds near 10%

Strategy has nothing new to disclose since the start of this reporting week. The company's most recent 8-K, filed Monday, October 5, and covered in full in Thursday's treasury piece, reported a purchase of 334 BTC for $28.7 million at an average price of $85,928.14 — direction acquired, funded by a mix of new stock sales ($15.7 million) and cash on hand ($13.0 million). No filing has landed since; the next is due around October 12, after this recap's publication. Holdings stand unchanged at 848,000 BTC against a $63.97B cost basis, or $75,440.70 average cost per coin. That filing marked Strategy's third consecutive "acquired" week, following September 21 and September 28, and its eighth straight week without a disclosed sale since the string of sales in June through early August.

What moved this week was, again, the market price the unchanged position is marked against — and this week it barely moved at all. bryptoflows' own live price feed showed bitcoin trading at roughly $82,992 as of Saturday, down about 2.0% over the trailing seven days from roughly $84,716, but essentially unchanged from the ~$83,000 level Thursday's treasury piece used for its own cushion estimate. At that price, the 848,000 BTC position is worth in the neighborhood of $70.4B against its $63.97B cost basis, an unrealized gain of about $6.4B, or roughly 10.0% above cost — a hair below the 10.7% implied by Strategy's own September 30 fair-value marks, but essentially flat on the week, since bitcoin spent the week giving back ground on Wednesday and partly recovering it rather than trending in either direction. As always, this mixes bryptoflows' own SEC-sourced cost basis with bryptoflows' own live price feed and should be read as directional rather than exact, since it moves with bitcoin's price day to day.
