Bitcoin ETFs Shed $202M as a Friday Crash Erases the Week
The week in flows
US spot Bitcoin ETFs closed the reporting week of October 26 through 30 with a net outflow of -$202.4M, a result that understates how the week actually unfolded. Session by session: +$110.3M Monday, +$176.0M Tuesday, +$137.3M Wednesday, +$17.2M Thursday, and -$643.2M Friday. Four consecutive positive sessions built up +$440.8M of gross inflow, and the fifth gave back nearly 150% of it — the category's worst single session landed on the week's last trading day and turned what had been a quietly positive week into a net loss.
Friday did all of the damage, and then some. The -$643.2M session ranked at the 1.7th percentile of all 720 trading sessions bryptoflows has on record since January 2024, with a z-score of -1.78 — a genuine tail event, not an ordinary down day. That is almost the identical rank to the -$635.6M session this column covered three weeks ago on October 22, which landed at the same 1.7th percentile with a z-score of -1.77. Two sessions, three weeks apart, in effectively the same extreme corner of the category's two-and-a-half-year distribution — October has now produced two of the category's rarer down days rather than one.
bryptoflows' rolling averages show the shape of the week clearly. The three-session average (Wed-Fri) has fallen to -$162.9M a day, dragged down entirely by Friday. The five-session (weekly) average sits at -$40.5M, negative only because Friday outweighed four positive sessions. The ten-session average is still +$9.9M, barely positive, while the twenty-session average has turned sharply negative at -$40.4M. The sixty-session average, at +$81.8M, still carries meaningful positive momentum from earlier in the autumn rally. The five-session flow-acceleration reading came in at -$100.7M — a sharp deceleration, the current week swinging from a strong four-day run straight into its worst session on record this year.
Where the moves came from
BlackRock's IBIT was, again, nearly the entire story in both directions. It carried the week's first four sessions almost single-handedly — +$110.3M Monday, +$151.5M Tuesday, +$136.0M Wednesday, +$12.8M Thursday — before giving back -$233.7M on Friday, more than its combined gain from the first three days. IBIT still finished the week at +$176.9M net, the only fund in the category to post a positive week, and that single fund's net flow actually exceeds the category's own -$202.4M total by more than $379M.
Fidelity's FBTC stayed quiet through most of the week — +$24.5M Tuesday, +$10.5M Thursday — before its own -$201.0M Friday erased all of it and more, for a net -$166.0M. ARK 21Shares' ARKB and Grayscale's legacy GBTC reported exactly zero every session until Friday, when ARKB shed -$129.5M and GBTC shed -$53.3M — their entire week concentrated in that single session. Bitwise's BITB had small positive days Wednesday (+$1.3M) and Thursday (+$8.8M) before a -$25.7M Friday left it net -$15.6M on the week.
Morgan Stanley's MSBT added +$4.2M, all on Thursday, and was the only fund with any Thursday activity that wasn't partly reversed by Friday — it reported zero Friday rather than joining the selling. Grayscale's newer BTC mini trust shed -$15.3M, all on Thursday, and WisdomTree's BTCW gave back -$3.8M, also Thursday-only. Invesco Galaxy's BTCO, Franklin Templeton's EZBC, Valkyrie's BRRR and VanEck's HODL reported exactly zero every session of the week.
Breadth flipped completely between the week's first half and its last session. Monday through Wednesday saw one or two funds positive and none negative, with the rest flat — a narrow but entirely one-sided tape. Thursday widened to four positive against two negative, the week's broadest session. Friday inverted all of it: zero of twelve funds positive, five negative, and seven reporting flat — the week's only session with any negative flow at all. Notably, Friday's selling was not concentrated in one or two names the way some past selloffs have been: bryptoflows' concentration reading for the session came in at a product HHI of 0.279, below the 0.414 life-to-date average, because the loss was spread fairly evenly across IBIT, FBTC, ARKB, GBTC and BITB rather than dominated by any single fund.
Zooming out
Cumulative net flow into the category since inception now stands at $57,048.1M, down from roughly $57,250.5M a week ago. The drawdown from the category's all-time cumulative peak of $62,735.9M widened to -$5,687.8M, or roughly 9.1% below peak, from 8.7% the week before. Period totals through Friday's close: week-to-date -$202.4M, month-to-date (October, now complete) -$515.9M, quarter-to-date (also October, the first month of Q4) -$515.9M, and year-to-date +$453.9M — still positive for 2026, but thinner than the roughly +$656M this column reported a week ago, and October itself closes as the category's first net-negative calendar month since June. Life-to-date concentration is essentially unchanged at a product HHI of 0.414 and issuer HHI of 0.447; a single week does not move a measure built on two and a half years of history.
Strategy: no new filing this week, cushion falls toward 3%
Strategy has nothing new to disclose inside this reporting window. The company's most recent 8-K, filed Monday, October 26, and covered in full in Thursday's treasury piece, reported no bitcoin purchases and no sales for the period October 19-25 — direction none, the first such week since September 14 and the end of a run of five straight acquiring filings. No filing has landed since; the next is due around November 2, after this recap's publication. Holdings stand unchanged at 848,517 BTC against a $64.02B cost basis, or $75,446 average cost per coin.
What moved this week was, again, the market price the unchanged position is marked against — and this time it moved hard against the cushion. bryptoflows' own live price feed shows bitcoin at roughly $77,611 as of this writing, down from the $80,251.50 Thursday's treasury piece used and from $80,579 this column's own figure a week ago. At that price, the 848,517 BTC position is worth in the neighborhood of $65.85B against its $64.02B cost basis, an unrealized gain of about $1.83B, or roughly 2.9% above cost — down sharply from the 6.1% cushion Thursday's piece reported and the 6.8% this column reported last Saturday, driven entirely by bitcoin's price retreat rather than any change in holdings or cost basis, both of which were frozen this period. At current levels, a further decline of roughly 2.8% in bitcoin's price, to around Strategy's $75,446 average cost, would put the entire position underwater on paper for the first time this column has tracked it. As always, this mixes bryptoflows' own SEC-sourced cost basis with bryptoflows' own live price feed and should be read as directional rather than exact, since it moves with bitcoin's price day to day.
What to watch
- Whether Friday's bottom-2% session was a one-off air pocket or the start of a deeper slide. October has now produced two sessions in the bottom 2% of the category's entire history — October 22 and October 30 — a density of tail events this column has not reported in a single month before.
- Whether IBIT's +$176.9M week, built almost entirely Monday through Wednesday, holds up or gives back more of it, given that Friday's -$233.7M already erased more than the fund's combined gain from the week's first three sessions.
- Strategy's next 8-K, due around November 2, for whether the zero-purchase week was a pause before the pattern of smaller and smaller buys resumes, or a genuine stop — and whether bitcoin's price has fallen far enough by then to put the position underwater against its own average cost.
- MSCI's eligibility review naming Strategy among companies without substantial operating assets, with a final list of affected names due November 11 — flagged in Thursday's treasury column as still an open question rather than a settled one.
- Whether the twenty-session supply-absorption ratio and the broader institutional-demand composite, which Friday's own institutional-signal piece showed recovering to -3.4 from -14.9 on a four-session ETF streak, hold up now that the streak has been broken.
